Why do some people grow taller after a fever?
#1
Question
This happened to me a couple of times and to some people I know. I also found plenty of people on health websites claiming the same thing but I can't find a good answer. Many "experts" were saying that it's a coincidence but there are countless kids and teens (me included) who grow taller by a significant amount exactly after the fever ends.

I'm not an endocrinologist but maybe it has something to do with hormones? Maybe in some people the release of that extra growth hormone weakens the body temporarily.

Then again it might be a coincidence. Kids get ill all the time and they grow taller quite frequently so it's not unlikely for the two to occur at the same time.

It's just a coincidence man. Why would a fever make you grow taller?

This. I can see how the hormonal changes and chemical imbalances that accompany growth could cause a fever.

"Other mechanisms such as illness may factor into growth as well. Conventional medical wisdom once held that children do not grow when they are sick, although "mother" wisdom certainly disputed that fact. ("When a child stands up after a fever they stand taller," went one old saying.)

Children often get sick when they grow, "although we don't understand the underlying mechanisms," Lampl said. One theory is that "the chemical cascade that controls growth at the cellular level also suppresses the immune system," she said. And continual ear infections in children have been found to be "coincident with growth spurts," she added."

That's the answer I was looking for. Thanks a lot.
