Why are tall men more common than short men?

Assuming a 5'9 average, there are many more 6'0+ famous people than 5'6 or below. And I personally know many more men who are 6'0+ than men who are 5'6 or below. I know several men who are 6'7-6'9 (10-12 inches above average) but I don't know any men who are 10-12 inches below average

That's because people under 5'6" are much less likely to become famous.

You are the exception then. Most people don't know anyone (personally) over 6'5", much less over 6'7".

In the American population, only 14.5 percent of American men are 6 ft tall or taller. Only 3.9 percent of men are 6'2" or taller. I agree, that a lot of famous people are pretty tall but there's also a lot of famous people average height or shorter as well.

At least one of them has Marfan syndrome, the other is a Dutch immigrant, and the other two were childhood friends. I think 6'7 is 1/2000 so it's not that unusual to know a few guys around that mark.

The average height for men in the U.S. is closer to 5'10" according to the CDC.  When you say "famous people" I suspect you're thinking about:

Entertainers (actors, singers, and comedians)
Athletes (The avg. height of Football players is 6'2 1/2", Baseball - 6'1 1/2", Basketball - 6'6" or so WWE  - Well over 6 ft.  All the major sports have heights well above average)
Politicians

Entertainers regularly exaggerate their heights.  And so do politicians.  The media (and everyone else) also actively berates and discriminates against short men.  You're also using a comparison that isn't valid ---

Six feet is 2 inches above average.  Five-foot-six is 4 inches BELOW average.  The correct comparison would be 6'2" to 5'6".

Interesting logic there. Applying the average of white people to an entire country, which is only 62% white. 

And according to that CDC report the average was actually 5'9.2, closer to 5'9 than 5'10. It's pretty obvious that 5'10 is not the average since the US is full of latinos, asians, arabs, old men, etc. And Trump who is only 6'0.5 towers over all his white American buddies.
