How come people view 5'9" and 5'10" so differently?

People see 5'9" as short but 5'10" as average/tall when they see those numbers on paper, but why is there such a percieved difference, could it be the round number, or the fact 5'10 guys look 6 feet to most people.

Because there's no question that 5'10" is average. 5'9" is on the lower end of average so it's a bit of a grey area.

Also 10 looks much greater than 9 because it has 2 digits.

It's a round number and it also has two digits like Matodon says.

Why do customers view $9.99 and $10 so differently? Wink

I mentioned that, that's what I meant by round number, I was asking to confirm the difference.

They don't. 5'8 guys think that 5'8 and 5'9 are viewed so differently. 5'11 guys think 6'0 and 5'11 are viewed so differently etc.

I think it's psychological.  As matodon stated above, 10 is 2 digits and 9 is one digit.  5'10" is the first height in the 5's so-to-speak with a double-digit number after it.  And of course - women - on dating sites seem to choose 5'10" as a "minimum", I think, because of the 2 digits after 5.  Call is ridiculous if you want, but women are ridiculous sometimes.  Again, it's psychological, but some women are very height-bigoted against short men.

I said in my post it was a round number, also women thinking anything under 6 feet is short contributes because while a 5'10" guy can claim 6'0" a 5'9" guy cannot.
