The western average is supposed to be 5'9"-5'10" and 6 footers are supposed to be quite common, but I live in a heavily populated area and I rarely see people over 5'11".

Seriously, measure and mark 5'11" on your wall and look at it closely. Then go for a walk and check how many guys are that tall. I do this all the time and 75% of men are certainly under 5'11". Most men are around 4 inches taller, so they're 5'8".

The average is proven to be 5'9"-5'10". You said you live in a heavily populated area, which means there are more elderly and minorities bringing the average down to 5'8". White 6 footers are common, but not in the general population, the average in most places is 5'9.5".

Just because it's a heavily populated area doesn't mean it has more minorities and elderly.

You are right. I feel average most of the time and I'm not even 5'9". Sometimes I wonder about the accuracy of these national statistics when it comes to height. Where do they get the measurements from? Are they self-reported? If not, are the people measured early in the morning or in the middle of the day?

No. From my experience most middle aged white men are 5'11.

The CDC measurements were probably taken in the morning where people tend to be taller.
